What makes a luxury home timeless?

Everybody would like their new luxury home to be timeless and enduring.

So what is it about design that makes it look timeless or enduring? In a word it’s “Movement”

We could all sit in front of a fire and watch the flames flickering and moving  or we can watch a waterfall and it never gets boring, The reason is the flame and the water are constantly changing both colour and shape and we become captivated by the movement.

Just like the fire or water our homes need movement to be timeless. We can find movement in most natural products like timber and stone both in the colours and textures. When you look at a stone wall or a timber panel the variations in grain and colour as well as surface texture mean that they never look the same and you are always discovering with your eyes. This makes the design more or less enduring as this “movement” diverts your attention from the static elements of the design such as large surfaces like walls and ceilings or large areas of the same colour. After a while these colours and surfaces look tired because you get used to them and the only way to breathe life into these is by changing the colours. Even the outside of the home and the backdrop play a part in creating this movement through plants and trees.

Of course you need to get the balance right between the static and the “moving” elements and budget plays a large part in this process

So when you are talking to your designers about wanting a timeless home make sure they consider using a combination of static and moving elements both inside and outside the home and you will have a much better chance of achieving the result you are looking for.  Of course it goes without saying that at Signature Custom Homes we apply these basic principles to everything we design and we would love the opportunity to demonstrate our design talents to you.

If you would like to discuss your new home project why not give Craig or myself a call and we will be happy to assist you whatever way we can.
